The world of behavioral health care is changing rapidly. Leading this transformation is the newly opened Psychiatric Emergency Center (PEC) by JPS Health Network. Unveiled on September 10 at a ribbon cutting ceremony, and officially opened to the public on September 17, this cutting-edge facility represents a crucial advancement for the over 2 million residents of Tarrant County. The PEC focuses on urgent behavioral health care, aiming to create a warm, welcoming environment for patients and care teams during critical times.

“With this new center, our patients and families receive high-quality care in an environment that feels safe, calming, and respectful of their unique needs,” said Nekesha Oliphant, M.D., Chair, Psychiatry and Behavioral Health. “I want our community to know we are here – without judgment – and this is a safe place for healing and wholeness.”

This new center replaces the former 10th-floor location in the hospital and is designed specifically to be a free-standing building that promotes accessibility and comfort. The PEC goes beyond providing services; it creates a sanctuary where individuals feel safe, understood, and supported in their most vulnerable moments.

A New Era in Behavioral Health Care

The PEC marks a turning point in how urgent mental health needs are managed. Traditional emergency rooms often lack the specialized resources and supportive environments suited for those experiencing psychiatric crises. The PEC steps in to fill this gap with expert teams and dedicated facilities focused solely on mental health.

Designed with insight from mental health professionals, patients, and families, the PEC reflects the real needs of those seeking assistance. For example, the building incorporates input from community members and experts. This engaged approach results in a space that is both functional and comforting, with features that actively promote healing and recovery.

“With the opening of the new Psychiatric Emergency Center, we’re expanding access to care in a way that is meeting the needs of our growing community,” said Karen Duncan, M.D., President and CEO of JPS Health Network. “This center ensures that no matter the circumstance, individuals and families can come to JPS and be supported by experts who are ready to respond around the clock.”

Comprehensive Services Tailored to Community Needs

One of the essential features of the PEC is its extensive range of services, designed specifically for the needs of the community. The center offers immediate assessments, crisis intervention, and stabilization services, all provided by a dedicated team of licensed mental health professionals. Data shows that rapid intervention can reduce the risk of hospitalization by up to 50%. This timely support can make a significant difference in individuals’ lives.

“With this new center, our patients and families receive high-quality care in an environment that feels safe, calming, and respectful of their unique needs,” said Nekesha Oliphant, M.D., Chair, Behavioral Health. “I want our community to know we are here – without judgment – and this is a safe place for healing and wholeness.”

The PEC also prioritizes ongoing support by providing referrals to outpatient services and community resources. This continuity of care is vital for individuals recovering from crises, helping to prevent relapses and promote long-term health and wellness. For example, after receiving initial care at the PEC, patients are connected with local counseling services that can assist them in maintaining their mental health journey.

Community Impact and Future Goals

The influence of the PEC extends beyond its physical space. By improving access to urgent behavioral health care, JPS Health Network is addressing a pressing need in Tarrant County.

Looking forward, the PEC is committed to evolving alongside community needs. By establishing ongoing partnerships with local organizations and mental health advocates, the facility ensures its services remain relevant. This dedication to continuous improvement highlights the PEC's goal of not only treating mental health crises but also tackling the root causes that lead to these challenges.

With its focus on patient experience, extensive range of services, and commitment to community impact, the PEC stands as a crucial ally for those navigating mental health crises.
